3I wanted some information about the workshops in the school holidays.

5I have two daughters who are interested.
6The younger one's Lydia, she's four,
7do you take children as young as that?
8Yes,
9our Tiny Engineers workshop is for four to five-year-olds.
10What sorts of activities do they do?
11All sorts.
12For example, they work together to design a special cover that goes round an egg,
13so that when it's inside they can drop it from a height and it doesn't break.
14Well, sometimes it does break but that's part of the fun!
15Right.
16And Lydia loves building things.
17Is there any opportunity for her to do that?
18Well, they have a competition to see who can make the highest tower.
19You'd be amazed how high they can go.
20Right.
21But they're learning all the time as well as having fun.
22For example, one thing they do is to design and build a car that's attached to a balloon,
23and the force of the air in that actually powers the car and makes it move along.
24They go really fast too.
25OK, well, all this sounds perfect.
26Now Carly, that's my older daughter, has just had her seventh birthday,
27so presumably she'd be in a different group?
28Yes, she'd be in the Junior Engineers.
29That's for children from six to eight.
30And do they do the same sorts of activities?
31Some are the same, but a bit more advanced.
32So they work out how to build model vehicles,
33things like cars and trucks,
34but also how to construct animals using the same sorts of material and technique,
35and then they learn how they can program them and make them move.
36So they learn a bit of coding?
37They do.
38They pick it up really quickly.
39We're there to help if they need it,
40but they learn from one another too.
41Right.
42And do they have competitions too?
43Yes, with the Junior Engineers,
44it's to use recycled materials like card and wood to build a bridge,
45and the longest one gets a prize.
46That sounds fun.
47I wouldn't mind doing that myself!
48Then they have something a bit different,
49which is to think up an idea for a five-minute movie and then film it,
50using special animation software.
51You'd be amazed what they come up with.
52And of course, that's something they can put on their phone and take home to show all their friends.
53Exactly.
54And then they also build a robot in the shape of a human,
55and they decorate it and program it so that it can move its arms and legs.
56Perfect.
57So, is it the same price as the Tiny Engineers?
58It's just a bit more:
59£50 for the five weeks.
60And are the classes on a Monday, too?
61They used to be,
62but we found it didn't give our staff enough time to clear up after the first workshop,
63so we moved them to Wednesdays.
64The classes are held in the morning from ten to eleven.
